Fleas can be a problem which no one likes to admit to, but they are more common than you think especially when you have pets.
Cats and Dogs are very prone to Fleas their eggs fall onto the carpet from your furry friend, hatching when vibrations let them know their next blood meal is present.
What time of year do you get Fleas in the house?
All year really, problems are more apparent when dwellings have been left during extended breaks or rented accommodation that has lay vacant for a while.
Do they all bite humans?
When fleas have not fed for a long period of time, they are not choosy about their choice of host so feeding on humans is normal.
There are three species of flea that we find biting humans in the United Kingdom.
Cat and Dog Flea, (Ctenocephalides felis & canis) and Bird Flea (Dasypsyllus gallinulae). Bird Fleas are found in old nests so partially blocked off fire places in bedrooms are a common place to find them and in and around the pet budgie cage.
Pet Fleas are more common than you think the stigma that goes with having fleas stops people telling others that there is an issue and results in helping the fleas move to other households as like Bed Bugs they are great hitch hikers.
What do they look like?
The Flea (Dog, Cat or Bird) is about 2 to 3mm in length without wings, they have long legs which enables them to jump onto their host.
How long do they live?
Fleas pass through four stages as they pass from egg to adult, eggs, larva, pupa and adult. These stages dependant on environment can take from two weeks to eight months, Carbon dioxide can also wake the flea from its sleep just like vibration from movement of pets and humans, heat and noise.
Fleas will quickly drop off a host after biting if the blood is not suitable so a great starting place for finding eggs is your animal’s basket.
How do I know if I have fleas in my house?
It is always good practice to get physical evidence of the species as any professional pest controller will not treat your property without a specimen so as to properly treat your premises. You can buy one from amazon or make a Flea trap with a soup bowl filled with water and fairy liquid sit a desk light over the bowl and hey presto.
